Mitigator (Kinemetrics MitiGator, P/N 110600) is a compact elevator seismic switch: a small, self-contained unit that detects strong earthquake motion and operates up to three relays to stop, alarm, or interlock the equipment wired to it. It is designed to shut down elevators, escalators, industrial equipment, and other critical devices during a strong earthquake, before continued operation can injure passengers or damage machinery.
Inside the 3 × 4 × 0.75 in case, triaxial micro-machined silicon accelerometers monitor vertical, longitudinal, and transverse acceleration. A digital 1 Hz to 15 Hz bandpass trigger filter separates earthquake motion from spurious signals, and each relay has its own user-selectable threshold from 25 mg to 0.5 g. A relay can trigger on any single axis or on the vector sum of all three axes, so the switch responds to shaking from any direction.
For elevator work, one setup command loads the manufacturer’s ASME A17.1 configuration (vector triggering at 7.5 %g). Equivalent setups are provided for ASCE 25-97 gas shutoff devices (17.5 %g) and California Code 3137 hospital elevators (30 %g). The unit runs a self-test at power-on and reset, shows its status on a front LED, and needs no routine maintenance.
Mitigator mounts through a single 0.25 in hole with its X, Y, and Z axes oriented as marked on the case. Supply 10–24 VDC and wire each relay (common, normally closed, normally open) from the pluggable 15-position terminal strip to the elevator controller seismic input, an alarm circuit, or an interposing relay. Relay contacts are rated 1 A at 30 VDC and must not switch AC line power directly. Thresholds and relay behavior are set over the RS-232 port with any terminal program, and the switch starts automatically after power is applied.
