QL-UltraSense UHS Optical Switching C-Band FBG Interrogator Series

The QL-UltraSense UHS Optical Switching C-Band FBG Interrogator Series is a portable ultra-high-speed fiber optic sensing platform for real-time monitoring of fiber Bragg grating sensors. It supports 2 to 8 fiber channels, up to 4 or 8 FBG sensors per fiber depending on model, ultra-high-speed optical switching up to 100 kHz or 300 kHz, integrated computing, Ethernet connectivity, and model-dependent sampling speeds from 976 kS/s and 1.3 MS/s up to ultra-fast multi-megahertz performance.

OVERVIEW

Description

The QL-UltraSense UHS Optical Switching C-Band FBG Interrogator Series is a high-performance family of portable fiber optic interrogators. It is designed for ultra-fast dynamic sensing in defense, aerospace, mining, structural health monitoring, and advanced industrial test environments. The platform is built for applications where very high acquisition speed, precise strain and temperature measurement, and reliable operation in harsh environments are required.

This product family supports 2 to 8 fiber channels and is available in different sensor-density configurations depending on model. Some variants support up to 4 FBG sensors per fiber channel in a narrower-band configuration.

Meanwhile, others support up to 8 FBG sensors per fiber channel in a wider C-band configuration. The interrogators are designed for real-time concurrent monitoring of strain, vibration, acoustic emission, and temperature.

In addition, they cover derived parameters such as pressure, acceleration, and force when used with suitable transducers.

The series includes multiple ultra-high-speed variants. The UHS1.3M-16CxP models provide 1.3 MS/s sampling with support for 4 FBGs per fiber. They operate over a narrower C-band option of either 1527 ±1.5 nm to 1546 ±1.5 nm or 1546 ±1.5 nm to 1565 ±1.5 nm, with approximately 19 ±2 nm spectral bandwidth.

The UHS1.3M-32CxP and higher 32-channel-class family models support 8 FBGs per fiber. Additionally, they operate over the broader 1527 ±1.5 nm to 1565 ±1.5 nm C-band range with approximately 38 ±2 nm bandwidth.

Sampling performance varies by model. The datasheet shows variants including 976 kS/s, 1.3 MS/s, 1.95 MS/s, 3.90 MS/s, 7.81 MS/s, 15.62 MS/s, and 80 MS/s. These models provide corresponding measurand signal bandwidths ranging from about 415 kHz to as high as approximately 36 MHz depending on model. This makes the family suitable for ultra-fast dynamic events including acoustic emission and other high-frequency sensing tasks.

Measurement performance across the family includes resolution below 1 pm, sub-0.1 pm with FFT, and absolute accuracy better than ±5 pm.

Temperature measurement range is listed as -200°C to 300°C, with an option for up to 1000°C.

Depending on model and sensor count, the datasheet lists strain ranges such as ±2,000 µε with 4 or 8 FBGs per fiber.

Alternatively, it lists ±4,000 µε with 2 or 4 FBGs per fiber and higher dynamic ranges when fewer gratings are used on a fiber.

The family includes both standard and AI-enabled variants. The AI models include an integrated 26 TOPS AI module with TensorFlow and ONNX support.

The systems use integrated industrial computers with 32 GB RAM and 4 TB NVMe SSD storage. Some pages list Windows 11 for certain variants, while later AI models list Debian 12 OS.

All models communicate through Ethernet, include Optira™ Cloud Subscription support, and use HiSenseView® or HiSenseView® SB software depending on model.

The interrogators are built in rugged solid-state stainless-steel chassis with no moving parts. They are designed for operation from -10°C to +55°C, with storage from -20°C to +70°C. Depending on model, dimensions are around 285 x 445 x 235 mm, with weight approximately 12.5 to 13 kg. Power input is 110 to 260 VAC universal 50/60 Hz, and standard warranty is 15 months.
